What I am describing below is not tampering with any of the normal means of security or checks so is not a hack or illegal. It seems to just be a way to trick the official Mercedes/Garmin update software into installing the latest version for you.

Ensure you download the correct version for your system. Note that Version 1.0.X is a newer DLM program but only for cars with a different NTG system with widescreen display, so not for the R172.
You do not need to Install the program. You could install it or, as I did, you can extract the .exe using 7Zip and just run the program without installing. The username and password for this program are DLM and DLM (in capitals) (as per the accompanying pdf file that comes with the Mercedes Download Manager!)

Important: Before proceeding with the update, back up your current Garmin SD card using the DLM 3.0.12 backup tool. This step is crucial to protect your data and ensure you can restore your system if anything goes wrong.

Insert the Garmin SD card into your computer’s SD card reader.

Select the “Backup” option.
Choose a location on your computer to save the backup file.
Wait for the backup process to complete. This may take several hours, depending on the size of the card and the speed of your SD card reader. My backup took 3 hours as my SD card reader is soooooo slow but DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

Once the update is complete, safely eject the SD card from your computer.

3.2 Resetting Audio 20 System

This is the anomaly that allows anyone to get the latest version of the Maps: Important step: In your Audio 20, and, with your Garmin SD card in the slot, select Vehicle, reset settings in the Audio 20 menus (Not the Navigation menu). This resets the Audio 20. (You will lose some settings like USB stick audio cataloguing and your Navigation and phone favourites but this is no big deal at all). Most importantly, the reset seems to mean that the Garmin Card update period of 60 days is also reset so you can update your maps!

Wait for Audio 20 to restart, and just enter Garmin Navigation to confirm it works.
NB. I may be worth leaving your car out in the open with ignition on for 5 minutes receiving it’s 3G signal to authenticate this reset – I did this and just waited for my live traffic update to occur meaning that the SIM card in my cars own communication device was communicating with Mercedes. It is possible that this is necessary as the allowable map updates are tied to your VIN and the SD card when you start DLM. DLM servers know the current version of your SD card even if you lose the SD or it fails, so you can use the tool to download and Restore a cloned SD (That only works on your cars with your VIN!) to a blank SD card if you have to.

Put the Garmin SD card back in your PC and start DLM.
You should immediately be notified that there is a new map update (and a new software update, possibly, if you skipped step 4). Install it. Mine took 3 hours to download (!) (It is 19GB) and 3 hours to write to the card (!).
Sometimes, after installing, the new update doesn’t activate on first attempt. Click the Activate button a couple of times if it doesn’t. If it still doesn’t activate, restart DLM and you are notified there is a cancelled update, which will then reinstall / activate and the DLM software will close automatically. Use windows explorer to “Eject” the card rather than just pulling it out of it’s slot as you don’t want to risk corrupting the card if it is still being accessed!
Put the SD card into your car. You will now have the latest maps! (Currently 2020/2021 V15.0 for Europe). In Navigation, scroll to settings, My Maps, to confirm this.
